Born in Italy to German parents and now an American citizen as well while boasting an equally diverse and multifaceted repertoire, Augustin Hadelich, the guest soloist for tonight’s concert, is considered one of the most exciting personalities in the international classical music scene today. He is an instrumental virtuoso capable of refashioning what is perhaps the most frequently played concerto in the violin literature, Mendelssohn’s E-minor work for the instrument, into a fascinatingly fresh and intimate experience. Both preceding and following this composition of inexhaustible beauty, this richly-programmed concert conducted by András Keller will feature symphonies: the first written by Schubert when he was scarcely 18 years old, and the second by Tchaikovsky at 38, though he was already grey and gloomy. Schubert’s Third thus exudes youthful cheerfulness and lightness, while the Russian composer’s Fourth has always been associated not only by posterity, but also by the composer himself, with the concept of fate, the doom that burdens all of us.
