Alexander Sladkovsky studied music at the Moscow and St Petersburg Conservatoires. In 1997 he made his debut as a conductor at the Opera and Ballet Theatre of the St Petersburg State Conservatoire. In 1999 he was a prize-winner at the III International Prokofiev Conducting Competition. From 1997–2010 he was a conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the St Petersburg State Academic Cappella, Principal Conductor of the Opera and Ballet Theatre of the St Petersburg State Conservatoire and the St Petersburg Cappella and a conductor of the New Russia State Symphony Orchestra. Since 2010 he has been Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan.
