Film director Zoltán Huszárik (1931–1981) lived just 50 years and created just two full length films, although these two works – Szindbád (1971), Csontváry (1980) – made him a legendary figure of Hungarian cinema and one of the true greats. His art is characterized by extreme sensitivity, the poetry of his gossamer-fine effects and a special affinity towards the opportunities inherent in visuality. The latter is hardly surprising given that Huszárik was not only a film director but talented graphic artist as well. His taste and high standard are evident in that he requested the best Hungarian composers of the day to write music for his films: the music for Szindbád is the work of Zoltán Jeney, Csontváry Miklós Kocsár, and the short film Elégia that of Zsolt Durkó. These three are also the composers whose works pay tribute to Zoltán Huszárik. András Keller conducts a new composition by Zoltán Jeney, Zsolt Durkó is represented by his music for the film Elégia, while from among the creative works by Miklós Kocsár the audience have the chance of hearing the Concerto in memoriam H. Z. for horn written in memory of Zoltán Huszárik two years after the director’s death. The final work in the concert programme, Bartók’s Music for Stringed Instruments, Percussion and Celesta, suits the director’s greatness and way of thinking that knew no compromise. Soloist is Bálint Tóth, principal instrumentalist with Concerto Budapest.
