The 2025 Day of Listening - Hommage à Sofia Gubajdulina
Concerto Budapest’s all-day contemporary music festival
Artistic director: András Keller, music director and chief conductor of Concerto Budapest
Since it began in 2015, The Day of Listening (A Hallgatás Napja) has grown into one of Budapest’s most prestigious contemporary music festivals. Each year, it introduces several generations of top Hungarian composers at the Budapest Music Centre. The particularly noteworthy feature of all the works to be performed is that they are uniquely intertwined to fashion an unrepeatable musical fabric that lends them a special character through their mutual interaction on stage.
The festival is defined by the broad spectrum of both its repertoire and performers: the same artists step onto the stage alternately as soloists, orchestra members and chamber partners – allowing them to prove their versatility time and again.
The Day of Listening is an unmissable event for lovers of contemporary music: it is here that composers meet one another, listen to each other’s pieces, mingle with the audience, and share their thoughts on the world premieres.
For artistic director András Keller, it is of great importance to always offer the audience something new and to make every effort to bring the music of our time closer to the listener.
“Contemporary music is not something to be understood, but to be heard, to be felt and to be allowed to flow through you. Anyone who makes this spiritual and emotional investment may become so enriched they will see their entire lives differently. Above all, The Day of Listening is time set aside for open, unprejudiced and deep musical immersion.”
