After the visits of Christian Tetzlaff and Augustin Hadelich, another international star violinist is coming to Concerto Budapest to lead a session. Anthony Marwood, a violinist with a distinguished career as a soloist, conductor and chamber musician, will hold a free master class for exceptional talents studying at the university level at Concerto Budapest’s headquarters on Páva Street on 6 December from 17:00 to 19:00.
„If there were rock star equivalents in the classical music world, British violin ace Anthony Marwood would be on the list,” wrote The Age in praise of this artist who has worked with many prestigious orchestras, including the Hallé Orchestra, the Boston Symphony and the London Philharmonic, and with such renowned conductors as Valery Gergiev and Sir Andrew Davis. He is also an outstanding chamber musician, regularly collaborating with Steven Isserlis, Alexander Melnikov, Dénes Várjon and James Crabb.
Marwood is also a frequent guest with the world’s leading chamber orchestras, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. Over the course of his career, he has released more than 40 albums, with his recording of the Walton Violin Concerto winning widespread critical acclaim.

Concerto regularly hosts world-class soloists, so I thought it was important to pass on their knowledge to the younger generation of musicians. The presence of these artists in Hungary should not only be about giving a fantastic concert, but also about inspiring young people – giving them direct experience that may prove to be key factors in their future careers,” says András Keller, founder and artistic director of the Concerto Master Class programme.
On 7 December, the day after the session, the violinist will join cellist Miklós Perényi in a Brahms concerto as part of Concerto Budapest’s Signature season ticket programme, conducted by Gábor Takács-Nagy.
The programme includes the Academic Festival Overture, the Double Concerto for Violin and Cello in A Minor and the Third Symphony.
The pre-concert masterclass offers participants the unique opportunity to learn directly from this extraordinary artist, described by The Sunday Times as ‘a thrilling, virtuosic soloist’.
The University’s free programme series is not only open to aspiring and practising musicians, but also to all music lovers who pre-register for the course.
